Chloe Marks sits down with Noise11’s Paul Cashmere to discuss the debut album from Chloe Marks & The Mayhem, Bright Lights, Late Nights.
The album brings together three years of music, relationships, heartbreak, loss, personal change and the experience of building a life around music. Chloe explains how the band unexpectedly turned three days of studio time into a full album, recording seven songs in an intensive session rather than following the traditional singles-to-EP-to-album path.
Chloe also explains why Chloe Marks & The Mayhem record as a live band, with the musicians performing together in the studio to capture the interaction and energy they create on stage. The approach has allowed spontaneous moments to become part of the recordings, including the raw demo of “Carolina” that closes the album.
The conversation goes inside some of the album’s most personal songs. Chloe reveals the story behind “Don’t Make Me Choose”, written about a bandmate facing a choice between a relationship and music, and discusses “Aadel”, a song she wrote around a decade ago that was rediscovered during the album sessions.
Chloe also talks about the band’s Americana identity, the blues-rock roots of Scotch And Cider, and an Eagles influence that helped shape the guitar solo on “Break Some Hearts”.
The interview covers Chloe Marks & The Mayhem’s experiences at Tamworth Country Music Festival, Groundwater Country Music Festival, Urban Country Music Festival and Town And Country Festival, as well as opening shows for Daryl Braithwaite and James Blundell.
Finally, Chloe looks ahead to the band’s second album and reveals plans to introduce new instruments, new musical directions and take the sound of Chloe Marks & The Mayhem to another level.
