Following their self-titled 2019 debut, released just before the world shut down, Jacob’s Run had to put live plans on hold. But Michael never stopped writing. During lockdowns he continued crafting songs at home, which eventually evolved into the cinematic new record.
What makes The Other Side stand apart is its orchestral scope. Michael explains how the decision to bring in a 32-piece orchestra elevated the songs, fulfilling a lifelong dream. Legendary producer Mark Opitz (INXS, Cold Chisel) shaped the album’s cohesive sound, encouraging the band to think “majestic” and spotlight vocalist Susie Ahern, whose harmonies became a defining element.
The record explores themes of longing, love, and loss, but also resilience, coming out the other side of the pandemic and personal challenges. Michael reveals how recording live as a band gave the songs a powerful energy missing from the debut.
We also hear how his Italian heritage shaped the lush soundscapes, how bandmates Phil and Dragan brought their own artistry into the arrangements, and why Jacob’s Run works so well as “a band without ego.”
Michael reflects on his admiration for Snow Patrol, the surprise radio love the band received in Texas, and the upcoming live shows that will bring The Other Side to audiences in Australia and beyond.
