Gang of Youths, Amy Shark, Paul Kelly, Jessica Mauboy and Ainslie Wills have songs shortlisted for the APRA Song of the Year for 2018.
In a statement Amy Shark said “There’s two moments that you think ‘I could be a songwriter’. There’s the moment when you’re like I enjoy songwriting and I’m gonna do it. But then the moment I thought I could be a songwriter wasn’t until I’d completely signed to a record label, management, everything else. I wasn’t sold until everything was sort of happening because you have your doubts.”
David De’aupepe of Gang of Youths said, ‘Some people really like construction, some people like being a swimming coach. I really, really like songwriting. Really like it.”
Paul Kelly had a philosophical view of songwriting. “The misconception that most people have is that songwriters know what they’re doing,” he said. “We don’t. A shoemaker or table maker, they go to work at the start of the day and they know, this is what I do to make these shoes. They follow the steps, and at the end of the day I’ll have a pair of shoes. If you’re a songwriter you don’t have that. You’ve gotta turn up to work but you mightn’t come home with a song. It’s like fishing. You gotta turn up. And one day you’ll come home with a fish.”
The 2018 APRA Music Awards will be announced on 10 April 2018 in Sydney.
