The sudden cancellation of Byron Bay Bluesfest has left a major hole in the Australian music calendar and for artists already preparing to perform, the impact goes far beyond disappointment.
In this exclusive Noise11 interview, Paul Cashmere speaks with teenage guitarist Taj Farrant and his father/manager Brandin Farrant about what the collapse of the festival means for their immediate plans.
Taj had already performed at Bluesfest three times and was preparing for his fourth appearance in 2026. But when the news broke, the Farrants were thousands of kilometres away in a hotel room in Nashville after a show.
Brandin explains the reality of touring as an independent artist. With Taj not signed to a record label, the young guitarist finances much of his global touring himself. Flights, visas, accommodation, equipment and touring infrastructure can cost tens of thousands of dollars per run.
The Bluesfest trip alone had already cost around $6500 in flights and that’s before merchandise production and other expenses.
Despite the setback, Taj is determined to still come home to Australia. The family has already paid for the flights and are now scrambling to organise last-minute shows so fans can still see him perform.
The interview also covers Taj’s rapidly growing international career. He has already shared stages with artists including Buddy Guy, ZZ Top, Eric Johnson, Eric Gales and Kingfish, while touring extensively across the United States and Europe.
At just 16 years old, Taj Farrant has more than 100 shows booked worldwide this year – and he’s already planning the release of not one but two new albums.
Watch the full Noise11 interview to hear how the Bluesfest collapse is affecting artists behind the scenes and why Taj Farrant is determined to keep playing regardless.
