Rockhampton Hangover, the long road that led him to finally step outside of Busby Marou, and the extraordinary collaboration with American singer-songwriter Ben Kweller.
Busby explains that the idea for a solo album goes back nearly 20 years, even before the formation of Busby Marou with Jeremy Marou. Originally planning to record his own material, Busby instead found instant chemistry with Marou and the pair went on to become one of Australia’s most loved acoustic duos.
With Busby Marou taking a pause after their fifth album, Busby finally committed to recording a solo project. The songs for Rockhampton Hangover were written across Australia, often at home around campfires and late-night writing sessions. Busby then collaborated with a wide range of songwriters including Phil Barton, Nash Chambers, Morgan Evans, Jordie Lane and Ben Abraham.
The turning point came when Busby travelled to Texas to write with Ben Kweller. The pair wrote four songs in a single morning, leading Kweller to step in as producer and record the album at his studio in Dripping Springs, near Austin. The sessions became a family affair, with both families living on the property during the recording.
In the interview Busby also discusses the deeply personal themes behind songs such as Waiting For Tomorrow, written after the death of his father, and Cyclone, which reflects the leap into a new phase of his career.
Busby also reveals that Busby Marou are preparing their next album and have decided to move forward as independent artists.
