Gloria Estefan Reunites Miami Sound Machine

Gloria Estefan will reunite with the Miami Sound Machine for one night, September 14, at the Minskoff Theatre.

The show kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month and will benefit Viva Broadway, an initiative that helps bridge the gap between the world of Broadway and the Latin community. Funds from this show will specifically go to The Broadway League’s Family First Night, a nationwide program to encourage economically at-risk families to attend theater on a regular basis.

The Miami Sound Machine was formed in 1975 by Emilio Estefan as the Miami Latin Boys. Two years later, Gloria Maria Fajardo Garcia and Merci Navarro joined the band for a Cuban wedding which went so well that they were asked to join on a permanent basis.

Gloria and Emilio married in 1978 as the band was releasing their second, self-titled album. At the end of 1982, Gloria became the soul lead singer as Navarro left the band and, in 1985, the group finally broke into the mainstream with their ninth album, Primitive Love. That album included three top ten singles (Conga, Bad Boy, Word Get In the Way) and they followed with Let It Loose with the hits Rhythm Is Gonna Get You, Can’t Stay Away From You, Anything For You and 1-2-3.

In late 1988, the Miami Sound Machine name was dropped and Gloria Estefan became a solo artist.
