Mansfield was one of Australia’s highest rating radio presenters. Since 1990 he has presented the shows Nightline and Remember When on Melbourne’s 3AW with another Australia broadcast legend Philip Brady.
Mansfield was 16 when he scored his first radio job at 3UZ in Melbourne. In 1962 he moved to 3KZ and became the late night announcer then onto 3XY as morning show host.
Bruce Mansfield also migrated to television in 1968 and appeared with Graham Kennedy on In Melbourne Tonight. He was also a comedy actor in channel 9’s Cartoon Corner, playing a Chinese Superman.
In 1974 Bruce moved to the Ten Network and became the chief newsreader for Eyewitness News. His other TV tenures include working on Personality Squares and Perfect Match and later Good Morning Australia and Rove Live.
In the 80s Bruce worked on 3AW as the character Uncle Roy on John Blackman’s breakfast show. He stayed in the role until 1990, even after Blackman left and was replaced by Darren James.
Bruce was diagnosed with late stages of Prostate Cancer in September 2015.
It’s with very heavy hearts that 3AW reports Bruce Mansfield has died after a long battle with prostate cancer, aged 71.
Bruce died peacefully at his home surrounded by family this morning.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Bruce’s family, particularly his wife, Jill, their three children and his beloved grandchildren.
Bruce is a legend of Melbourne’s entertainment industry after a glittering career spanning five decades across TV and radio.
He was a TV newsreader for many years before he and long-time 3AW co-host Phil Brady dominated Melbourne’s airwaves after joining together for Nightline and Remember When in 1991.
There will be a special edition of Remember When paying tribute to Bruce Mansfield from 8PM tonight where listeners can relive a wonderful career and call in with their memories.
