Texan guitar player Alejandro Escovedo has a big fan in Bruce Springsteen. In 2012 at SXSW both Springsteen and Escavedo were showcasing. Bruce made it a point to be wherever Alejandro was as often as he could.

“He has been very nice to me and very kind and generous. He is sweet enough to get up on with him,” Alejandro Escovedo tells Noise11.com. “Management would tell me “you can call him but he’s probably going to stay in”. As soon as I called him he said ‘Yeah, man I’ll come right over” and he came right over. He couldn’t wait to play. He is one of those kind of guys”.

Alejandro Escovedo comes from a musical family. His niece of Shelia Escovedo (Shelia E). His brothers Pete and Coke are also well-known musicians. Pete is Shelia’s father. Alejandro says it is hard for the family to get together. “The family is close. We all love each other. The family works a lot. We are never hardly in the same place at the same time anymore,” he says. “Everybody is touring or recording or doing something. I am going out to California in December to play a benefit for the victims of these horrendous fires. Hopefully I’ll get some of the family to come and play with me for that”.

In 1999 Alejandro also paid tribute to Skip Spence, the singer from Moby Grape who died in 1999. “I was a big Moby Grape fan and a big fan of Skip. Skip Spence is the Sid Barrett of America. He has always had to kind of legacy to me. I have always loved that record and it was amazing to get to play on it”.

The other name to pop up in his biography is David Bowie producer Tony Visconti. Alejandro shared Bowie’s producer and also got him to perform some Bowie tricks for his own albums. “He would ask me “what do you want on this record” and I would say “just make it sound like David Bowie”. We used a lot of Bowie tricks on that album,” he said. “It was a special experience. I went on to make another two albums with Tony. We made three albums altogether”.

Alejandro Escovedo will tour Australia for David Roy Williams.
