Eddie Vedder Joins Bruce Springsteen For AC/DC In Melbourne

Eddie Vedder singing AC/DC with Bruce Springsteen and Tom Morello is about as good as it can get on an Australian stage.

Vedder was a surprise guest for the Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band’s first Melbourne show on Saturday night helping Bruce on an AC/DC classic ‘Highway To Hell’ as well as one of Bruce’s own ‘Darkness On The Edge Of Town’.

Springsteen is back in Australia for the second time in under a year and the stage is his party.

Every night at a Springsteen show is unique and this show was special with the inclusion of the complete 1985 classic ‘Born In The U.S.A.’ album played from start to finish. It was the first time Springsteen had ever played a complete album live in Australia.

Springsteen chose his written requests well. His version of the Gary US Bonds ‘Jole Blon’ was in the first part of the set. The song, arranged by Moon Mullican, acted as a bookend to Mullican’s 1958 classic ‘Seven Nights To Rock’ towards the end of the show.

Rage Against The Machine, now Springsteen guitarist, Tom Morello created one of the greatest moments in the show sharing vocals on ‘The Ghost Of Tom Joad’ and channelling Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour with his guitar solo.

Steve Van Zandt (Little Stevie) was back in the band after missing the 2013 tour due to television commitments. He is currently playing Franl ‘The Fixer’ Taglia in the TV show Lilyhammer and was previously starring in The Sopranos as Silvio Dante. Van Zandt is the character in the band. He is often clowning it up with Bruce.

Stalwart members Max Weinberg and Nils Lofgren almost blend in with the 18 piece E Street Band with other longtimers Garry Tallent and Roy Bittan who have been with Springsteen since 1972 and 1974. Bruce does pay tribute to the late members Clarence Clemons and Danny Federici during ‘Tenth Avenue Freeze-out’. Clarence’s nephew Jake Clemons has become an excellent replacement for his uncle on Sax keeping the signature Clemons sound a vital part of the E Street Band sound.
