How Mark Ronson Scored Stevie Wonder For Uptown Special Album

Mark Ronson found collaborating with Stevie Wonder quite a ‘heavy’ experience.

The 39-year-old musician released his fourth studio album, Uptown Special, earlier this month and it debuted on the Billboard 200 chart at number five.

Mark worked with Stevie on two songs for the album, Uptown’s First Finale and Crack in the Pearle, Pt. II, and according to Mark, the collaboration came about quite magically.

“I wrote his manager a letter. I had written that melody and was singing it in my head, and it had a harmonica sound – and I just thought, ‘What the hell’,” he recalled to UK newspaper The Mirror.

“I didn’t hear anything for a couple of months – then I suddenly got a message from his manager saying, ‘Yes.’

“I’ve spent most of my adult life listening to his music – he’s my favourite musician and singer-songwriter of all time – so it was heavy.”

Mark has worked with numerous legendary musicians in his career, which spans over two decades but his relationship with late songstress Amy Winehouse will always be dear to him, as producing her album Back to Black was deeply impactful.

“I’m going to think about her for the rest of my life,” Mark mused to British newspaper Daily Star previously. “There are things on this [Uptown Special] record I think she’d like, and others she’d f**king hate.

“Most people would judge her Back to Black

as my strongest and most impactful work. It’s important to start each record with the same motivation and expectation to make the best record you can.”
