In today’s music world a band like Hunters & Collectors would not have survived. After debuting with their self-titled album in 1982 and peaking at number 21 Hunter & Collectors started to go backwards fast. Album two ‘The Fireman’s Curse’ peaked at number 77 and the third ‘The Jaws of Life’ went unnoticed at number 89.
Luckily for us the 80s were different times and people like Michael Gudinski and Warren Costello at Mushroom (who are still around today) put gut feel ahead of commerce.
Hunters & Collectors turned around for Mushroom at album number four ‘Human Frailty’ which ended up selling double platinum and generating an iconic Australian song in ‘Throw Your Arms Around Me’.
‘Throw Your Arms Around Me’ has been covered by Crowded House and Pearl Jam.
Because of the Gudinski and Costello faith Hunters & Collectors went on to become one of Australia’s greatest live bands of the 90s which for those you missed it first time around will get a second chance with Red Hot Summer 2020.
When you go by the numbers Hunters & Collectors biggest chart success is not one you’d expect. ‘Demon Flower’ reached number 2 on the Australian chart but only generated a moderate hit with ‘Easy’.
