Leon Bridges will return to Australia in February and March 2027 for The Happiness Anytime Tour, with the Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter scheduled to perform at outdoor venues in Sydney, Brisbane, Fremantle, Adelaide and Melbourne. The Australian run includes a 6 March performance at Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens as part of Live at the Gardens, with 54 Ultra and Surprise Chef joining the Melbourne bill.
The tour announcement comes ahead of the 25 September release of Bridges’ fifth studio album, Happiness Anytime, his first full-length project since 2024’s Leon. The Australian dates will give Bridges an opportunity to introduce the new material to audiences while revisiting a catalogue that has taken him from the retro soul of his debut Coming Home into contemporary R&B, neo-soul, folk and country influences.
Bridges said he was looking forward to returning to Australia, where he has previously progressed from smaller venues to major concert halls, arenas, outdoor events and wineries.
“I’m always excited to get back to Australia,” Bridges said. “I’ve had some really special moments there over the years, and I’m looking forward to returning and sharing this party with everyone.”
Happiness Anytime is being released in three parts, with the final instalment completing the 12-song album on 25 September. The project was produced by J Lloyd-Watson and Lydia Kitto of British trio Jungle. According to the supplied album notes, the record combines elements associated with Bridges’ 2015 debut Coming Home with influences developed through his collaborations with Khruangbin.
The album’s stated focus is movement, groove and joy, with Bridges describing happiness as something he wants the music to leave with listeners rather than something to be actively pursued. “For me, happiness is not a feeling that you chase,” he said. “I want this album to be something that lingers with people and lingers in people’s bones.”
The current live production has also been reworked around those ideas. Leon Bridges Presents Happiness Anytime features Bridges with a DJ, horn section and three backing vocalists. The production draws partly on the communal atmosphere of Jamaican dancehall culture, with movement and dance incorporated into the presentation.
The Melbourne performance will feature 54 Ultra, the New Jersey-based solo project of singer, songwriter and producer JohnAnthony Rodriguez, alongside Melbourne instrumental quartet Surprise Chef. 54 Ultra will also support Bridges on his Sydney, Brisbane and Fremantle headline dates. Surprise Chef’s appearance is specific to the Live at the Gardens performance.
For Surprise Chef, the Melbourne date comes during a period that includes the October release of Frogs In A Pond, their fifth studio album and first for Concord Jazz. The group’s instrumental music draws on soul, funk and cinematic influences, with the new record inspired in part by Italian film scores from the 1960s and 1970s.
Bridges’ Australian return follows a career that began with the release of Coming Home in 2015. The album established his early reputation through a contemporary interpretation of 1950s and 1960s soul and earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album. The title track became an early international calling card, while “River” subsequently gained renewed exposure through HBO’s Big Little Lies.
His second album, Good Thing, broadened the palette towards 1980s quiet storm and 1990s neo-soul. Released in 2018, it also produced “Bet Ain’t Worth the Hand”, which won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance. Bridges subsequently collaborated with Khruangbin on the Texas Sun EP in 2020 and Texas Moon in 2022, while Gold-Diggers Sound was released in 2021.
In 2024, Bridges released Leon, a fourth studio album incorporating folk and country influences. Happiness Anytime represents the next stage of that continuing stylistic movement, with the album’s production connecting Bridges’ established soul and R&B foundation with the groove-led approach of Jungle.
The Australian tour also reflects the continuing international reach of Bridges’ catalogue. Coming Home achieved Platinum certification in the United States and Canada and Gold status in Australia and the United Kingdom, while “River” has received multi-Platinum certifications in several territories.
