Liverpool’s Cavern Club Celebrates 60th Anniversary

In Liverpool, all music roads lead to 10 Matthew Street, the home of the Cavern Club.

Even though it was opened in 1957 as a jazz club, it hosted one of the earliest performances of the Quarrymen and, later, hosted The Beatles numerous times. Most of the most important bands to come out of the British Invasion also played the club at least once over the years.

Today (January 16) marks the 60th-anniversary celebration for the venue and they are celebrating with a whole day of events which is being topped off by the first ever appearance by Gilbert O’Sullivan.

In addition to his performance, O’Sullivan was also enshrined on the Cavern Club’s Wall of Fame in a short ceremony at the front of the club.

O’Sullivan wrote “”It is an honour to be inducted to the Cavern’s Wall Of Fame. The Cavern Club is where world domination in popular music began, and The Beatles led the way. They have always been a huge influence to me throughout my career, so this day is very special.”

Also receiving a special plaque were Rory Storm and the Hurricanes.

Finally, a new statue adorns the front of the club in the form of Cilla Black.
