The Monkees will mark 60 years of their landmark debut album with a 1LP/3CD edition featuring stereo and mono mixes, television versions, alternate takes, demos, backing tracks and archival recordings.

The Monkees will celebrate the 60th anniversary of their self-titled debut album with a new deluxe edition due October 30, 2026 through Rhino. The 1LP/3CD collection expands the 1966 album with its original stereo and mono mixes alongside rare recordings from the sessions and the television series that established Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork as international stars. The collection has been produced by Monkees historian Andrew Sandoval, with new liner notes from Dolenz.
The release documents an album that became central to the unusual relationship between television and recorded music in the 1960s. The Monkees was created alongside the NBC television series of the same name, with the music assembled through a combination of the four performers, professional songwriters, producers and Los Angeles session musicians.
Released in October 1966, the album followed the success of “Last Train To Clarksville”, which became The Monkees’ first US number one single. The album itself spent 13 consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard 200 and has been certified five-times platinum in the United States. It also reached number one in the United Kingdom and peaked at number three in Australia.
The new edition gives particular attention to the production process behind the record. The vinyl contains the original stereo album, while the first CD presents the original mono mix and additional rehearsals and demos. The second CD brings together television versions, alternate vocal takes, promotional material and radio spots. The third CD is devoted to backing tracks and related session material.
Among the archival recordings are the television mix of “Take A Giant Step”, an alternate vocal take of “Papa Gene’s Blues”, a rehearsal of “I Wanna Be Free” and multiple versions of “(Theme From) The Monkees”. The collection also includes the rare Kellogg’s advertising jingle and a Monkees radio spot.
The original album was recorded during July 1966 in Los Angeles. Sessions involved producers including Tommy Boyce, Bobby Hart and Jack Keller, with Nesmith producing two sessions of his own. Although the four Monkees supplied the vocals, their participation as instrumentalists on the album was limited, reflecting the production system established around the television project.
That arrangement became one of the defining aspects of The Monkees’ early recordings. Session players provided much of the instrumentation, while Dolenz, Jones, Nesmith and Tork contributed the vocals. Nesmith and Tork had stronger instrumental involvement on the tracks produced by Nesmith, including “Papa Gene’s Blues” and “Sweet Young Thing”.
The songwriting on the album drew from some of the leading writers of the period. Boyce and Hart supplied several songs, while Gerry Goffin and Carole King contributed “Take A Giant Step” and, with Russ Titelman, “I’ll Be True To You”. Nesmith wrote “Papa Gene’s Blues” and contributed to “Sweet Young Thing”.
“Last Train To Clarksville” provided the commercial breakthrough. Written by Boyce and Hart, the single was released in August 1966 before the album and reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Micky Dolenz sang the lead vocal. The song became closely associated with The Monkees television programme and was subsequently featured in several episodes.
Six decades later, Dolenz remains the surviving member of the original quartet. Davy Jones died in 2012, Peter Tork died in 2019 and Michael Nesmith died in 2021. Dolenz has continued to perform the group’s catalogue and is currently taking the 60 Years Of The Monkees production on the road.
The anniversary release therefore serves two purposes: it preserves the original album in its established stereo and mono forms while exposing the studio and television infrastructure that surrounded it. For listeners familiar with the finished record, the additional material provides a closer view of how a television-driven recording project became one of the major pop successes of the 1960s.
Dolenz’s new liner notes reflect on that period and the audience response to the music. “For all the madness of that time, there was joy in it,” he writes. “We were part of something that none of us could fully understand while it was happening.”
The Monkees (60th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) will be released on October 30, 2026. Dolenz’s 60 Years Of The Monkees tour will continue through the anniversary period, including a ten-date Australian tour in May 2027.
