On December 21, 1970, Elvis Presley was escorted into the oval office of the White House to meet then president Richard Nixon.

The meeting was a quickly arranged affair after Elvis had written a letter to the president telling him that he “can and will be of any service that I can to help the country out” and requesting a meeting.

The letter was dropped off at the White House and into the hands of a staffer who was a big Presley fan, possibly the biggest factor in making the meeting happen. Elvis was soon brought to the mansion and brought into the Oval Office where the two met.

Reports say they talked briefly about Elvis’ police badge collection and how the drug culture (and, some say, The Beatles) were ruining America. The now famous picture was then taken and, before he left, Elvis asked if he could have a badge from the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs, which he eventually received.

The meeting remained a secret for a year until Jack Anderson broke the story.

On April 15, 2016, the circumstances leading up to the now famous meeting and the aftermath will be examined in the movie Elvis & Nixon. Billed as a comedy, the film stars Kevin Spacey as Nixon and Michael Shannon as Presley along with Alex Pettyfer, Colin Hanks, Tate Donovan, Johnny Knoxville, Tracy Letts and Ashley Benson.
