Australian producer and vocalist Mark James joins Paul Cashmere at Noise11 to talk about the making of his new album Love Triangle – a record shaped by emotional storytelling, spiritual reflection and club-ready grooves.

After writing more than 30 tracks over two years, James took himself to South Africa to finish the project, forcing focus and silence from his usual environment in Melbourne. The result is a 14-track collection where no two songs sound the same, blending modern soul, lush house textures and heartfelt lyricism inspired partly by Jungle, the UK modern-soul innovators.

James breaks down the three thematic pillars of the album – relationships, observations and relaxation – revealing personal moments behind songs like I Don’t Know, written during a breakup, and One Night In Paris, inspired by a late-night memory abroad. Meanwhile, tracks like The Sun Is Shining lean into spirituality and Can We Live Right Now reflects uncertainty in today’s world.

He explains how many tracks begin as soulful pieces before being re-imagined as dancefloor anthems, a dual creative approach that keeps club energy alive without compromising emotional expression. Melbourne’s diverse music culture also plays a key role, fostering open-minded audiences and a mature demographic who have lived the club life and still seek deep musical connection.

With live shows planned for summer, Love Triangle marks James’ next chapter – blending personal stories with beats designed to lift spirits and move bodies.

Mark has been a legend in the Australian dance music scene for more than 30 years. He has a great set of ears and knows how to craft a song.
