McCartney was asked by New York City Ballet Mater In Chief Peter Martins if he would be interested in writing music for ballet. Sir Paul had a piece of music he didn’t know what to do with. He tailored his piece into the ballet ‘Ocean’s Kingdom’.

Sir Paul was also hands-on with how the ballet would look and feel as well as ideas for the costumes for the show. He recruited his daughter, world famous designer Stella McCartney, to design the costumes from his sketches.

McCartney had never written a ballet before but he has previously released a number of classical albums starting with his ‘Liverpool Oratorio’ back in 1991. “I had no idea what the rules were or if in fact there were any so I went back and wrote music with dance in mind,” he said.
