Kim Venable, the drummer for the late-60’s/early-70’s band The Classics IV, died on Sunday, June 12 at his home in Pike Road, Alabama.
Venable was born in Eclectic, AL on May 5, 1944 and was brought up in nearby Tuskegee.
In 1964, he joined the already established K-Otics out of Troy, AL who had regional hits with songs like Charlena (recorded at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals and Double Shot (of My Baby’s Love).
The band broke up in 1967 and, the next year, Venable was brought into the already established Classics IV to take over on drums so singer Dennis Yost could get out from behind the set and to the front of the stage. The band had already had a hit with Spooky but Venable was around to play live on the further hits like Stormy, Traces and Everyday With You Girl.
Kim eventually left the music business to settle in Tuskegee where he joined his family’s business, Dixie Concrete Pipe Company, Inc. Later in life, he returned to some songwriting as a hobby.
Venable is survived his companion, Judy, a daughter and a granddaughter.
