Scott Walker of the Walker Brothers dies at age 76

Pop legend Scott Walker of the Walker Brothers has died at age 76.

Scott’s passing was announced by his record label 4AD who posted “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Scott Walker. Scott was 76 years old and is survived by his daughter, Lee, his granddaughter, Emmi-Lee, and his partner Beverly.”

Radiohead’s Thom Yorke posted, “So very sad to hear that Scott Walker has passed away, he was a huge influence on Radiohead and myself, showing me how i could use my voice and words. Met him once at Meltdown, such a kind gentle outsider. He will be very missed”.

Walker (real name Noel Engel) formed The Walker Brothers with John Maus (John Walker) and Gary Leeds (Gary Walker) in Los Angeles in 1964. The trio moved to Great Britain in 1965.

Their first no 1 was the Burt Bacharach penned ‘Make It Easy On Yourself’.

That was followed up with ‘The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore’.

The Walker Brothers disbanded in 1968 and reformed in 1974 when they had another global hit with ‘No Regrets’. Scott was the lead singer and bass player for the trio.

During the breakup, Scott started his solo career and recorded 10 solo albums between 1967 and 1974 including three in 1969 alone.

Scott worked as a record producer. Pulp’s 2001 album ‘We Love Life’ was his doing. David Bowie recognised his work by covering Scott’s ‘Nite Flights’ on Black Tie White Noise and recording the Walker inspired ‘You’ve Been Around’ for the album as well.

Walker worked with Australia’s Nick Cave on a Dylan cover ‘I Threw It All Away’ in 1996. It was featured in the movie ‘To Have And To Hold’. Scott also recorded David Arnold’s ‘Only Myself To Blame’ for the Bond film ‘The World Is Not Enough’.

Scott’s final two albums were soundtracks for ‘The Childhood of a Leader’ (2016) and ‘Vox Lux’ (2018).
