Willie Nelson took the stage on Saturday night at Harrah’s Resort SoCal in San Diego but only started his opening number, “Whiskey River”, before calling off the show.

According to the San Diego Union Tribune, several people reported that Nelson had barely made it into the song when he started coughing and appeared to be having trouble breathing. His publicist told the newspaper that he was suffering from “a bad cold or the flu”.

Nelson has cancelled a number of shows for the week including last night at the McCallum Theater in Palm Springs, a series of three performances on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, and next Sunday at the Edgewater Hotel Casino in Laughlin, NV.

Willie has returned home to recuperate.

Nelson, 84, has been one of the most prolific singers and songwriters of the last fifty-plus years. He has released 72 studio albums between 1962’s And Then I Wrote and last October’s Willie’s Stash, Vol. 2: Willie Nelson and the Boys.
