Fun Lovin’ Criminals are finally heading back to Australia for the first time in 20 years. In this new interview with Paul Cashmere, Brian “Fast” Leiser opens up about the long gap between tours, the band’s history with Australia, and how the current line-up is keeping the music alive and fresh.
Fast recalls their last Australian visit in 2004 and the even earlier trip in 1999 for the Big Day Out. He also shares the unusual story of filming a Miller Beer commercial in Sydney that was meant to look like New York. Fans might also remember the “Loco” video shot on the infamous Rene Rivkin’s yacht during the same trip.
The conversation dives into their triumphant 2022 set at Poland Rock Festival, one of the biggest shows they’ve ever played, and how it cemented the strength of the new line-up following Huey Morgan’s departure. Fast explains that Australia will hear a big chunk of 100% Colombian, alongside fan favourites like “Love Unlimited”-a track personally praised by Barry White himself in his autobiography.
The band’s early connection with Quentin Tarantino is also explored. While they never recorded together, Tarantino was credited as a co-writer thanks to the band sampling his dialogue.
Looking ahead, Fast promises fans won’t just get nostalgia. Fun Lovin’ Criminals have been releasing new music with The Roosevelt Sessions (2022) and The Capistrano Sessions (2023), both showcasing a grittier, jazz-infused side of the band. Australian audiences will get a taste of these new songs alongside the hits that defined their career.
After two decades, Fun Lovin’ Criminals are finally back down under-older, wiser, and ready to throw one hell of a party.
