Moler return with a brand new record, 69. In this Noise11 Q&A, Paul Cashmere speaks with frontwoman Helen “Hellcat” Cattanach about the band’s unexpected return, the evolution of their sound, and how a casual reunion turned into a full creative revival.

Originally emerging from Melbourne’s underground rock scene in the late 1990s, Moler built a reputation for raw, guitar-driven energy influenced by classic proto-punk and garage rock. After disbanding in the 2000s, a reunion show just before the COVID era reignited the chemistry between members, eventually leading to new recordings.

The new album 69 reflects both continuity and change. Songs explore modern themes such as artificial intelligence and digital culture – topics unimaginable during the Golden Duck era – while maintaining the band’s signature stripped-back rock sound. Recorded largely live with minimal overdubs, the album captures Moler’s renewed focus on performance and collaboration, with three band members sharing vocal duties.

In the interview, Hellcat discusses songwriting inspired by dreams, the influence of artists like Roky Erickson, and how recording technology has shifted from tightly scheduled analogue sessions to flexible home-studio production. She also reflects on touring internationally with Weezer and Ash during the band’s first chapter and what those experiences taught them about performing on larger stages.

With new shows underway and more touring planned, 69 marks not just a comeback but a continuation – a sequel to Moler’s story rather than a reboot.
