Damon Albarn has postponed his appearance at the Sydney Opera House after gunmen took a number of patrons hostage at the Lindt Cafe in Martin Place.
The Sydney Opera House was also shut-down while police investigated the background of the Sydney siege.
Along with the hostage crisis, the Opera House was evacuated after a suspicious package was discovered. Although the venue later said the reports were false, they have decided to halt all performances for the time being to relieve the transportation networks in the city.
Contingent on the hostage situation, Albarn has been rescheduled to play two shows on Tuesday night at 7:00 and 9:30. From Damon Albarn’s Facebook page:
Due to circumstances beyond our control, tonight’s Sydney Opera House performance has been rescheduled to tomorrow, Tuesday 16th Dec at 7:00pm. The original start time of 8:00pm for the Tuesday 16 Dec 2014 performance has been rescheduled to 9:30pm, to accommodate the additional performance.
The Sydney Opera House released this statement:
Cancellation of tonight’s Opera House performances:
In light of the situation in the CBD today, we have decided to cancel tonight’s performances at the Opera House. This is to minimise pressure on transport networks and to provide as much notice as possible to staff and patrons.
The cancelled performances are:
The Australian Ballet’s The Nutcracker in the Joan Sutherland Theatre;
The Sydney Theatre Company’s Switzerland in the Drama Theatre; and
Damon Albarn’s performance in the Concert Hall.
Damon Albarn has agreed to schedule two performances tomorrow, one at 7pm and the other at 9:30pm.
