Mental As Anything’s extremely rare very first release ‘Mental As Anything Plays at Your Party’ has been given a limited vinyl release to mark its 40th anniversary.

‘Mental As Anything Plays at Your Party’ was released in September 1978. Not only was it Mentals first record, it was also the first release for Regular Records with the code: REG1.

1100 copies of the original EP were released. Now a further 500 have been produced 40 years later.

‘Mental As Anything Plays at Your Party’ included the first release of ‘The Nips Are Getting Bigger’, which later went on to become the band’s first hit song in 1979.

Regular Records was founded by Martin Fabinyi and Cameron Allan in 1978. Mentals were the first act signed. The second was Flowers who later became known as Icehouse.

Mental as Anything today is Greedy Smith, together with ex-Atlantics guitarist Martin Cilia, drummer Jacob Cook, guitarist/vocalist Craig Gordon and bassist/vocalist Peter Gray.

Mental As Anything recently recorded a new Mental As Anything Live at Hillsdale with producer/engineer Steve James. You can stream it now on Apple Music, Google and Spotify and get the CD from 25 January, 2019.

Founding member, Greedy Smith, said “Since 1977 the longest break I’ve had from playing with Mentals is 6 weeks in 1989/90 when I fell off a horse. Martin Plaza has been off the road for over two years now and I feel so proud of the players I have around me and the way the songs have been sounding I felt we had to properly record our live show and film it. We rounded up some pals to play to and just let rip.”

“We recorded through (our guitarist) Martin Cilia’s old Sonic Workshop mixing desk that Harry Vanda and George Young used to write on and then Steve James took it up to Brisbane to mix at Red Engine Studio” Greedy added. “Now if punters can’t get to our shows, for the life of me I don’t know why, we’ve been playing everywhere forever, if they can’t make it to the shows this recording shows ’em what they’ve missing.”

James Taylor Farewells Australia With Final Tour (Melbourne Review)

I could go to a James Taylor show just for the stories. The man is a part of music history and is still around to tell the tales of how it all began. Like, for instance, being the first artist signed to Apple Records. James “auditioned” for Apple with his song ‘Something In The Way She Moves’. "Paul went away and started the label and George went away and wrote the song”, he said.
