Juan De Marcos’ Afro-Cuban All Stars, the original band from the Buena Vista Social Club, will return to Australia in March 2019.

Juan De Marcos last toured Australia with Afro-Cuban All Stars for Bluesfest in 2006.

Afro-Cuban All Stars came to be in 1996 when World Circuit Records’ Nick Gold and former Sierra Maestra player Juan De Marcos gathered up musicians including Rubén González to record ‘A Toda Cuba le Gusta’ in Havana. Ry Cooder played slide guitar on ‘Alto Songo’.

After he worked on Afro-Cuban All Stars, Cooder went on to work on the Buena Vista Social Club with González and pick up a Grammy for his efforts.

Juan De Marco’s Afro Cuban All Stars have produced five studio albums between 1997 and 2005 plus two live albums ‘Absolutely Live’ in 2009 and Absolutely Live II in 2017.

A remastered version of the classic A Toda Cuba Le Gusta was reissued this year.

Juan De Marco’s Afro Cuban All Stars will tour Australia for Abstract Entertainment, presented by Roy Ortuso.

Sammy Hagar’s New Live Album Features Rai Thistlethwayte of Thirsty Merc

Sammy Hagar has always had a reputation for surrounding himself with powerhouse players, but his upcoming live album, Sammy Hagar & The Best Of All Worlds Band – The Residency (out October 10, 2025 via Big Machine Rock), brings a distinctly Australian twist. On keyboards, vocals and guitar is Rai Thistlethwayte, best known at home for fronting Thirsty Merc and more recently as a member of The Fabulous Caprettos. For Australian fans, the inclusion of Thistlethwayte in Hagar’s latest chapter is a striking reminder of how far the Sydney-born musician’s career has travelled.
