Against The Current have released the new video for ‘Protégé’, the latest preview of their forthcoming third studio album, Till Death & Back. The album will be released on October 30 and marks the first full-length record from the New York band since 2018’s Past Lives, as well as their first album as an independent act. The group will support the release with international touring, including two Australian headline dates in Melbourne and Sydney in January 2027.
‘Protégé’ follows three songs already released from the album, ‘Heavenly’, ‘Dead Man Walking’ and ‘Always You & I’. Together, the four tracks establish the musical and thematic direction of Till Death & Back, which continues Against The Current’s movement between rock, alternative and pop influences.
The album was executive produced by drummer Will Ferri, with production contributions from Erik Ron, Josh Gilbert, Morwell and Josh Saldata. Ron’s production credits include Panic! At The Disco and Godsmack, while Gilbert is known for his work with Spiritbox.
For vocalist Chrissy Costanza, the album is connected by an idea of fate and the consequences of personal change.
“Fate is the thread running through every song on this album, the belief that what’s meant for you is bound to you across time,” Costanza said. “The cost is the fire, the fight, the version of yourself you don’t get back. Till Death & Back is the promise that no matter how far you go, the thread never breaks, not even in death.”
The new song ‘Protégé’ explores the influence people have on one another and the process of becoming someone who may eventually feel unfamiliar. Its release gives listeners another indication of the album’s broader themes before the complete 10-track record is released.
Till Death & Back follows a substantial period of change for Against The Current. The band’s previous studio album, Past Lives, was released in September 2018. Since then, the trio has issued the Fever EP in 2021 and a series of singles while continuing to tour internationally.
Against The Current was formed in Poughkeepsie, New York, in 2011 by Costanza, Ferri and guitarist Dan Gow. The group initially built its audience through YouTube covers and collaborations before establishing itself as a recording and touring act. Its independently released Infinity EP appeared in 2014, followed by Gravity in 2015.
The success of Gravity helped lead to a deal with Fueled By Ramen. The label released Against The Current’s debut album, In Our Bones, in May 2016. The record reached No. 181 on the Billboard 200 and No. 15 on the Alternative Albums chart.
A major expansion of the band’s audience came in 2017 when Against The Current collaborated with Riot Games on ‘Legends Never Die’, created for the League of Legends World Championship. The song became one of the defining recordings of the group’s catalogue and connected the band with the global gaming and esports audience.
Past Lives followed in 2018, with songs including ‘Strangers Again’, ‘Almost Forgot’, ‘Personal’ and ‘Voices’. The album represented a further move away from the band’s earlier pop-punk emphasis towards a broader pop-rock and alternative sound.
After leaving Fueled By Ramen in 2022, Against The Current continued releasing music independently, including ‘Blindfolded’, ‘good guy’, ‘silent stranger’, ‘Barely Breathing’ and ‘Caught It’. The band also maintained its international touring activity, with Australia last featuring on the touring schedule in 2023.
