Jake Bugg will release Alamo on November 13, marking his first album as an independent artist on Thirty Tigers and a more introspective chapter in his career.

Jake Bugg will release his seventh studio album, Alamo, on November 13 through Thirty Tigers, with the Nottingham singer, songwriter and guitarist using his first record outside the major-label system to examine the experiences that have shaped him over more than a decade in music. The 11-song album is led by the new single Never Can Tell, a rockabilly-influenced song about trust, instinct and the lessons acquired through experience.
Alamo represents a significant change in circumstances for Bugg, who has spent much of his career working within major-label structures. His move to Thirty Tigers comes as he approaches 33 and follows a period he describes as personally difficult. Rather than continuing to look outward, Bugg has used the new album to examine his own experiences and the barriers he says he has built around himself.
“After all the years of touring and making records, it just felt like the right time to look inward,” Bugg says. “The last couple of years have been tough for me, and I’ve had a lot of struggles. I’m trying to navigate those and figure out where they stem from.”
That approach shaped the writing and recording of Alamo. Bugg says the album required a level of honesty he had previously found difficult, with the songs addressing isolation, relationships, memory and uncertainty.
The opening track, When The Night, establishes that reflective mood, describing the difficulty of being alone with one’s thoughts. The title track turns towards a relationship breaking down, while Cloud In The Sky examines unresolved experiences from the past.
Never Can Tell provides a more muscular entry point into the record. Built around a rockabilly influence, the song considers the difficulty of knowing whom to trust and the importance of relying on personal judgement after experiences that have made caution necessary.
Alamo was produced by Jimmy Hogarth and Steve McKewan. Hogarth’s production credits include Anohni, Amy Winehouse and Paolo Nutini, while McKewan has worked with Chris Stapleton, Carrie Underwood and Eminem.
The album also reconnects Bugg with the musical vocabulary that first established him: roots music, blues, folk and guitar-driven rock. The return to those influences comes after a career in which his sound has moved between acoustic songwriting, rock, pop and more contemporary production.
Bugg’s career began at remarkable speed. Born in Nottingham in 1994, he started playing guitar at 12 and was writing and performing his own songs by his mid-teens. At 16, he was selected for the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury Festival in 2011, a performance that helped lead to his signing with Mercury Records.
His self-titled debut album followed in October 2012 and reached No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart. Songs including Two Fingers, Lightning Bolt and Trouble Town established Bugg as one of the prominent young British singer-songwriters of the period. The album subsequently achieved triple-platinum status in the UK.
The following years brought a rapid expansion of his international profile. Shangri La arrived in 2013 after Bugg worked with Rick Rubin and Iain Archer, while his touring schedule included major festivals and a 2013 performance on Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage. He also supported The Rolling Stones at London’s Hyde Park and appeared on major American television programmes.
Bugg’s catalogue subsequently expanded through On My One in 2016, the largely acoustic Hearts That Strain in 2017, Saturday Night, Sunday Morning in 2021 and A Modern Day Distraction in 2024. He also continued to work beyond his own records, including playing guitar on Johnny Blue Skies’ 2024 album Passage Du Desir and joining Liam Gallagher and John Squire’s touring line-up as a special guest.
Alamo therefore represents more than another entry in an established catalogue. It places Bugg’s songwriting at the centre of a transition from a major-label career to independent recording, while confronting experiences he says have previously been protected by personal defences.
For Bugg, the next stage is about allowing those experiences to inform the songs without disguising them. Alamo will be released on November 13, with Never Can Tell providing the first indication of an album that places personal reflection alongside the roots-oriented sound associated with his earliest work.
