Jared Leto of 30 Seconds To Mars has a good chance of winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Dallas Buyers Club.
Dallas Buyers Club is based on the story of Ron Woodruff, who in 1985 after being diagnosed with the HIV virus became smuggling unapproved drugs into the United States to help suffers improve their quality of life.
Leto, who plays transsexual Rayon, gives one of the most incredible character roles in a movie in recent years. “It’s the first time I’ve made in a movie in five-years,” Leto told Noise11.com. “I play a transsexual in 1985 who gets AIDS and is dying. It was quite a transformative role and it was the first time that I had made a film in a while so we’ll see what happens”.
Leto, who has starred in Panic Room, How To Make An American Quilt and Fight Club, says he simply didn’t make a movie for five years because he didn’t have time. “Too busy,” he said. “You can’t do it all. It’s really hard to find three to six months to go and spend on a film when you’ve got tours and albums and all kinds of things happening. Good problems. There’s just not a lot of time to do everything”.
He doesn’t see his main job as an actor or a singer. “I just make things and share them with people. I actually do a lot of editing and most of my days it seems are spent designing things”.
Leto has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in the movie.
He has already won awards for his role of Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club for Best Supporting Actor from the African-American Film Critics Association, Alliance of Women’s Film Journalists, Austin Film Critics Association, Black Film Critics Circle, Boston Online Film Critics Association, Chicago Film Critics Association, Critics Choice Movie Award, Dallas-Forth Worth Film Critics Association, Denver Film Critics Association, Detroit Film Critics Society, Florida Film Critics Circle, Golden Globe Awards, Gotham Awards, Hollywood Film Awards, Houston Film Critics Society, Las Vegas Film Critics Society, Los Angeles Film Critics Society, Mill Valley Film Festival, Nevada Film Critics Society, New York Film Critics Online, North Texas Film Critics Association, Oklahoma Film Critics Circle, Phoenix Film Critics Society, San Diego Film Critics Society, San Francisco Film Critics Circle, Santa Barbra International Film Festival, Satellite Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, Southeastern Film Critics Association, St Louis Gateway Film Critics Association, Toronto Film Critics Association, Vancouver Film Critics Circle and Washington DC Area Film Critics Association.
Leto’s band 30 Seconds To Mars, however, has never been nominated for a Grammy Award.
Dallas Buyers Club has been nominated for six Academy Awards.
