Madonna Chart Figure Even Worse Than Expected

After one week on the charts, Madonna ‘Rebel Heart’ has performed even worse than projected in the USA.

Her Rebel Heart, which debuted last week at number 2, was projected to fall into the lower teens when the new Billboard charts were released earlier today. When all was calculated, she actually fell 2 to 21, an extremely bad sign for a high profile album from an iconic artist. The drop is even worse that that of Mariah Carey’s 2014 album Me, I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse. which fell 3 to 18 and that was considered a major failure. At the current pace, it is doubtful that Rebel Heart’s total sales will equal the first week numbers for her last album, MDNA.

In Australia it did equally as bad.

On a brighter note, Modest Mouse debuts at 3 with their latest, Strangers to Ourselves. Their first album in eight years, it failed to top the charts as did 2007’s We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank.

Mark Knopfler sets a new career mark in the U.S. as a solo artist with his new album Tracker. The LP starts at 14, three spots better than his previous best, 2009’s Get Lucky. Four of his albums with Dire Straits charted higher with 1985’s Brothers in Arms going to number 1 and 1978’s Dire Straits hitting number 2.

Overall, it was not a strong week for veteran artists in the U.S. as you have to get to Bob Dylan’s album Shadows in the Night, in its second week at number 89, before you complete a top ten of veteran albums. Only Modest Mouse and Knopfler had debuts in the full top 200.

The top five albums this week in the U.S.:
To Pimp a Butterfly – Kendrick Lamar
Empire: Original Soundtrack From Season 1 – Various Artists
Strangers to Ourselves – Modest Mouse
Fifty Shades of Grey – Soundtrack
1989 – Taylor Swift

The top five singles:
Uptown Funk! – Mark Ronson Featuring Bruno Mars (12th week at number 1)
Sugar – Maroon 5
Thinking Out Loud – Ed Sheeran
Love Me Like You Do – Ellie Goulding
Four Five Seconds – Rihanna & Kanye West & Paul McCartney
