Statement from the Foreday Riders

The Foreday Riders were very sorry to learn of the passing of former member John Power, who worked with them on and off during the 1970s and 1980s, appearing on the album ‘Riders Digest’ in 1986. Apart from his highly impressive music abilities, he was a fount of information on local and international blues and rock, as well as a witty conversationalist and a droll storyteller.

John came to the Riders from the blues/rock trio ‘Riverboat’ in 1970, joining the King brothers and drummer Paul Leaton in a 4-piece version of the Riders called ‘Blue Spirit’ (1970-73). He later worked with Sydney blues outfit ‘Junior and the Goldtops’ and went on to play with the esteemed ‘Company Caine’ and ‘Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons’, before settling back in Sydney with much-loved R & B outfit ‘The Hippos’. He fronted his own ‘John Power Blues Band’ some time later, and also backed international acts such as Bo Diddley and Roy Buchanan.

In later years he relocated to mid-west NSW (Wellington), where he and his daughter Julia cared for his ailing wife Sue. John suffered ongoing health problems in recent times, but we were very pleased to see him give a fine performance at the Rider’s 50th anniversary show in August, 2017. The Riders salute a great player and valued friend – he’ll be missed, and well- remembered.

James Taylor Farewells Australia With Final Tour (Melbourne Review)

I could go to a James Taylor show just for the stories. The man is a part of music history and is still around to tell the tales of how it all began. Like, for instance, being the first artist signed to Apple Records. James “auditioned” for Apple with his song ‘Something In The Way She Moves’. "Paul went away and started the label and George went away and wrote the song”, he said.
