Duncan Jones Praises Lorde’s David Bowie Tribute

David Bowie’s son Duncan Jones has thanked Lorde for her “beautiful” tribute to his late father at the BRIT Awards.

After Annie Lennox and Gary Oldman accepted the Icon Award on behalf of the late singer at the ceremony on Wednesday, 19-year-old Lorde took to the stage to perform her version of David’s famous track Life on Mars? alongside members of his backing band from his A Reality Tour in 2003.

Wearing a black waistcoat and trousers over a white shirt, Lorde looked overwhelmed with the magnitude of the occasion, particularly as she finished her rousing rendition of the song.

Following her performance, David’s son Duncan took to Twitter.com to reveal his feelings about the tribute.

“Finally found the links to tonight’s Brits. Just… beautiful. Thank you,” he wrote.

His words are in stark contrast to his verdict on Lady Gaga’s tribute to David at the Grammy Awards earlier this month. Gaga opted to copy David’s Star Man style by wearing a sparkling suit and dyeing her hair bright orange. As she performed a medley of David’s hits, she was accompanied by various special effects and technical trickery, but Duncan didn’t appear to be a fan of her translation of the songs.

“Overexcited or irrational, typically as a result of infatuation or excessive enthusiasm; mentally confused.” Damn it! What IS that word!?” he tweeted after the performance, with the definition found to be for the word “Gaga”.

After David’s tragic passing in January after a short battle with cancer, Lorde was one of the stars to pen her own tribute to the legendary musician.

She had met David when she was just 17, as she attended a party in New York held to honour actress Tilda Swinton.

“I’ve never met a hero of mine and liked it. It just sucks, the pressure is too huge, you can’t enjoy it,” Lorde wrote on her Facebook.com page. “David was different. I’ll never forget the caressing of our hands as we spoke, or the light in his eyes. That night something changed in me – I felt a calmness grow, a sureness. I think in those brief moments, he heralded me into my next new life, an old rock and roll alien angel in a perfect grey suit. I realised everything I’d ever done, or would do from then on, would be done like maybe he was watching.

“I realised I was proud of my spiky strangeness because he had been proud of his. And I know I’m never going to stop learning dances, brand new dances. It’s not going to change, how we feel about him. For the rest of our lives, we’ll always be crashing in that same car.”
