Nile Rodgers has recorded what he calls a “groundbreaking” record with Australian based British DJ Carl Cox.

Rodgers spent time in the studio recording with Cox in the city of Frankston, south of Melbourne, on his recent Australian tour.

“While I’ve been in Australia I have done at least enough material with Carl Cox that in my day what would be a full album,” Nile says in his interview with Noise11.com. “We had an exceptional session where I did something that I think is ground-breaking. I have never even thought about doing a record like this before.”

Carl Cox, once voted the number one DJ in the world, moved to Frankston a decade ago and spends every Australian summer at his house on the peninsula.

Cox was a huge Chic fan. He had not only all of the Chic records, but all of Nile Rodger’s lesser-known solo records as well. “The very first record he ever bought he told me was Chic, our first record ‘Dance Dance Dance (Yowsah Yowsah Yowsah)’. Ever since that day he has bought every single record that Chic has ever put out. He obviously knows my history,” Nile said.

The new record will be very different for Nile Rodgers. “It started with me just jamming and they heard me playing and he said “before we loved your records where you were solo but no-one really knows those records”. They were big to him because he is a DJ and also because he follows Chic. When we got together he focused on my guitar. He wanted it to be all about guitar guitar guitar which was interesting for Carl. We went into this funk direction, a jazzy house direction and I think what we did is amazing. We have had two days of recording that have just been wall-to-wall songwriting,” he said.

Nile Rodgers has worked with Duran Duran, Madonna, INXS, Diana Ross, B52s, David Bowie, Mick Jagger and Debbie Harry. His most recent collaboration was three tracks on Daft Punk’s ‘Random Access Memories”.

The Carl Cox, Nile Rodgers collaboration should be released sometime in 2014.
