Kevin Stanton, the former Mi-Sex guitarist, has died at the age 61.

Stanton was a co-founder of Mi-Sex with Steve Gilpin. The band formed in New Zealand in 1978. Singer Gilpin died in a car crash near Byron Bay in 1992.

Mi-Sex relocated to Sydney in 1978 and quickly made its fanbase becoming one of the cities most popular live bands. That grabbed the attention of producer and fellow Kiwi Peter Dawkins. Dawkins produced the debut album for Mi-Sex ‘Graffiti Crimes’. It was a Top 20 hit in Australia.

An additional track Computer Games was added to later editions of the album and gave Mi-Sex a number one record in Australia in 1980.

Mi-Sex had a string of hits including ‘People’ and ‘Space Race’ (1980), ‘Falling In And Out’ (1981), ‘Castaway’ and ‘Down The Line’ (1982) and ‘Blue Day’ (1983).

Stanton left the band in 1982 due to ill-health but returned after four months. Their final album before the break-up was ‘Where Do They Go’ with the hit ‘Blue Day’.

In 2011 the band reunited for the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal but Stanton was too unwell to participate.

Kevin had cervical spondylosis, a disease which affects the spine and neck.
