So at 7:45pm tonight I received this text message. It said, “Just played a soccer match with Weezer! Life is good”.

The message was from my mate Steve Horvat who ‘non-sport nerd me’ knows as the head of music label Dust Devil Music but millions soccer fans around the world know as the soccer great who represented Australia in international soccer including Fifa World Championships, the Summer Olympics and the OFC Nations Cup. He made 96 appearances in the National Soccer League which coincidentally is about the same number of appearances he has made to Lil Band O Gold gigs.

So I guess it made sense when Rivers Cuomo was as excited about meeting Steve as Steve was as meeting Rivers. “Very excited to play footie tomorrow with former Aussie international Steve Horvat!,” Rivers tweeted yesterday.

Tonight they played that match.

According to Steve it was “Just a fun kick around with some Weezer guys and soccer friends of mine. Just a 5v5 kick around which is what they wanted.”

I have no idea what a 5v5 even means but it sounded impressive.

Weezer play their first Melbourne show tonight (January 16) at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. They will be performing the Blue album in its entirety. The following night (January 17) at Melbourne’s Palais Theatre they will perform ‘Pinkerton’ from start to finish.

The tour started last Saturday in Brisbane.

Remaining dates after Melbourne are:

January 19, Sydney, Entertainment Centre
January 23, Perth, Perth Arena

Oh, by the way, for the record, Rivers played on Steve’s team. Steve’s team won.
