Joe Satriani and Steve Vai have released The Sea of Emotion, the debut full-length studio album from their SatchVai collaboration, through earMUSIC.

The album fulfils an ambition that dates back to 1973, when a 13-year-old Steve Vai began taking guitar lessons from 17-year-old Joe Satriani on Long Island, New York. More than five decades later, the two musicians have finally completed an entire studio album together.

Although their careers have frequently intersected through solo projects and the G3 touring franchise, a full collaborative recording had remained unfinished business.

“We’ve been planning this since 1973,” Vai says. “Just unconsciously.”

The project began to take shape following a G3 reunion tour, which gave the pair an opportunity to work together in the studio. What initially started as an idea to record one song developed into something considerably bigger after Satriani sent Vai two completed compositions, “The Sea of Emotion, Part 1” and “Part 2”.

Those recordings became the foundation for a ten-track album combining their shared musical history with the contrasting approaches each guitarist has developed throughout their respective careers.

“The biggest surprise was that we write in completely different ways,” Satriani says. “And that’s what made the project so fun and interesting.”

The Sea of Emotion covers a broad musical territory. “Mayhem” and “Bronco Freight Train” deliver more direct rock, while “Zoot Suit Riot” explores a playful swing influence. “Old Sins Have Long Shadows” introduces darker, cinematic textures, while “I Wanna Play My Guitar” features former Deep Purple and Black Sabbath vocalist Glenn Hughes.

The album also includes a reinterpretation of “Dancing”, originally recorded by Italian singer, pianist and songwriter Paolo Conte, alongside the melodic instrumental “The Feeling I Know”.

The central musical statement is the three-part title suite, which reflects the personal connection between the two guitarists. Its closing instalment, “The Sea of Emotion, Part 3 / Reflections on a Year and a Half”, incorporates an archival reel-to-reel recording from one of Vai’s early guitar lessons with Satriani.

The recording provides a direct connection between the beginning of their relationship and the musicians they have become.

“It illustrates just how far we’ve come,” Satriani says. “We’re these two kids who haven’t found our sound yet, but we’ve got enthusiasm. We’re chasing something, and we’re determined.”

The album was produced with keyboardist Eric Caudieux. The extensive list of musicians contributing to the recordings includes drummers Gregg Bissonette, Jeremy Colson, Kenny Aronoff, Matt Chamberlain and Mike Mangini, alongside bassists Billy Sheehan, Bryan Beller, Philip Bynoe, Matt Bissonette, Marco Mendoza and Henrik Linder.

For Vai, the significance of the project extends beyond bringing two established guitarists together for a recording. The opportunity to create something personal with the musician who first taught him guitar was central to the experience.

“That’s when I really feel, like, wow, we really did it,” Vai says. “It’s a beautiful coming together of me and my friend in a very intimate musical way. That was the reason we did the record.”

The SatchVai collaboration has also developed into a touring band, with Satriani and Vai joined by drummer Kenny Aronoff, bassist Marco Mendoza and guitarist Pete Thorn.

The Sea of Emotion now provides the first complete studio document of the partnership, bringing a musical relationship that began in a Long Island guitar lesson room more than 50 years ago to a new chapter.

The Sea of Emotion is available now on CD, vinyl and digital platforms through earMUSIC.
