Los Angeles alt-pop duo senses turn inward on ‘patterns’, their first original release since 2025, as Madison Taylor and Nick Sampson introduce the new song to UK audiences on tour with Noahfinnce.
Los Angeles duo senses have released ‘patterns’, their first original single in more than a year, with the new track exploring the struggle to recognise and break destructive thought cycles. Released through Hopeless Records on 27 October 2026, the punchy alt-pop song marks the pair’s return to original material following their 2025 EP onto something and a 2026 cover of Simple Plan’s ‘Perfect’.
The single finds vocalist and guitarist Madison Taylor and drummer Nick Sampson exploring the psychology of feeling trapped in familiar patterns of thought and behaviour. Musically, the duo use dramatic shifts in intensity to reflect the tension between recognising a problem and attempting to change it, maintaining the melodic hooks and emotional directness that have shaped their previous releases.
” This feeling is really emphasized by the dramatic sonic changes throughout, taking you through the experience of feeling stuck in these pre-existing patterns, and how it feels to try to break free of them,” the band said.
“We’ve struggled and felt overwhelmed with breaking this cycle many times in our own lives, and it’s definitely not easy to overcome. This song is that real-time awareness of the inner workings of your brain, and the process of overcoming these obstacles.”
The release continues a catalogue built around personal experiences, anxiety, relationships and the challenges of navigating everyday life. Rather than abandoning the accessible choruses that have helped establish their identity, senses use ‘patterns’ to explore a more introspective subject through a dynamic arrangement.
Taylor and Sampson formed senses in Los Angeles in 2019 after connecting through a Craigslist advertisement seeking musical collaborators. Taylor, who grew up between Sacramento and Green Bay, had already gained experience playing in high-school bands, while Fresno-born Sampson developed his musical background through ensemble work before moving to Los Angeles.
The pair began releasing music independently, developing a sound that draws on alt-pop melodies, punk energy and emotionally candid songwriting. Their early work eventually led to take me out of here, their 2023 debut EP, produced by Keith Varon.
The EP included ‘sleepwalking’, ‘gonna make sure’ and ‘novocain’, helping introduce the duo to a wider audience through radio exposure, playlist placements and live performances.
Their relationship with Hopeless Records, which began in 2024, provided a label platform for their developing career. The label’s history in alternative and pop-punk music offered a natural fit for the duo’s combination of accessible pop songwriting and punk-influenced intensity.
In 2025, senses followed their debut with i’m still breathing. Tracks including ‘diamonds on your dagger’, ‘every little thing’ and ‘nosebleeds’ continued to build their reputation for pairing catchy melodies with vulnerable lyrical themes.
The EP onto something, also released in 2025, preceded the new single. In June 2026, the duo contributed a version of Simple Plan’s ‘Perfect’ to the Songs That Saved My Life series, making ‘patterns’ their first new original song in more than twelve months.
The release coincides with senses’ current UK tour supporting Noahfinnce, giving British audiences an opportunity to hear ‘patterns’ in a live setting during its opening days.
The remaining scheduled shows include London’s Electric Ballroom, Saint Luke’s in Glasgow, Newcastle University Students Union and Manchester Academy 2. The run continues the duo’s efforts to build an international audience through touring, following support appearances with Charlotte Sands, Carlie Hanson, Leah Kate, Bailey Spinn and Boys Like Girls, as well as their own headline dates.
Live performance has been an important part of the band’s development. Their energetic sets and emotionally direct delivery complement the personal themes of their recordings, while performance clips shared online have helped introduce their music to listeners beyond the audiences reached through touring.
The duo describe their musical identity as “emo-friendly, punk-curious”, a phrase that reflects their position between contemporary alternative pop, pop-punk and emo-influenced songwriting. Their music is built around strong vocal melodies and immediate choruses, with arrangements that allow room for heavier passages and shifts in mood.
With ‘patterns’, that approach serves a song concerned less with external conflict than with the internal work of recognising familiar responses and attempting to move beyond them.
The new single represents a continuation rather than a wholesale change in direction. The melodic accessibility remains central, but the song’s contrasting sections give the subject matter a structural role in the music itself.
For a duo whose releases have increasingly explored personal vulnerability, ‘patterns’ offers another perspective on the gap between understanding a problem and finding a way through it.
The UK dates provide an immediate setting for the new material as senses continue to develop their audience outside the United States. With several EPs behind them, a continuing relationship with Hopeless Records and new original music now available, Taylor and Sampson are building on the foundations established since their formation in 2019.
‘patterns’ is available now through Hopeless Records.
