Sharon Jones Cancels White House Appearance Due To Illness

The great Sharon Jones has had to cancel her Monday appearance at the White House after coming down with pneumonia.

Jones, 60, who has had two bouts with pancreatic cancer, would need to take a careful watch on her health as treatments can severely lower the patient’s immunity, making the susceptible to things like pneumonia.

Sharon first announced in 2013 that she was suffering from bile duct cancer which was later revised to pancreatic cancer. Her initial battle was documented, in part, in the recent award-winning documentary Miss Sharon Jones!. It was at the premier of that film during the 2015 Toronto Film Festival that Jones announced that cancer had returned.

Jones announced the cancellation on her Facebook account:

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to perform at the White House tomorrow. I’m home in Augusta recovering from pneumonia and am too sick to travel. The Dap-Kings are still going to perform and luckily Binky Griptite and Saun & Starr will join them to cover for me.

The White House was hosting the South by South Lawn event that also included performances by the Lumineers, Gallant, DJ Beverly Bond and Black Alley. Also expected to be in attendance was President Obama, Leonardo DeCaprio and a number of social media stars.
