The Badloves have returned with their first new songs in almost 20 years. ‘southbrothertruckinsong’ is the song that has broken the drought.

Lead singer and songwriter Michael Spiby has revealed the song on Facebook. “It’s finally landed folks! “soulbrothertruckinsong” Our first new single in almost 20 years and I’m pleased to say this is the first of many more in line”.

Have a listen on Spotify:

The Badloves 2019 is:

Vocals / Guitar: Michael Spiby
Bass: Stephen O’Prey
Keys: Tony Featherstone
Drums: Jeff Consi
Backing Vocals: Susie Ahern
Crickets: Dan Wick

And yes, they are real crickets. Listen closely to the song to hear them singing along in the background.

The Badloves made their mark in Australian music history at the start of the 90s.

Australia finished the 80s with INXS, Jimmy Barnes, Icehouse, Midnight Oil and Crowded House owning the decade. The Angels, John Farnham and AC/DC were showing no signs of slowing. Daryl Braithwaite re-established himself, The Black Sorrows, Diesel and Noiseworks were emerging, Kate Ceberano transitioned to a solo artist and Hunters & Collectors went from naught to juggernaut.

The Australian live music scene was vibrant in the early 90s and that was the just the platform new Melbourne band The Badloves needed to establish themselves as (lead singer Michael Spiby would say) “an antidote to the after-party”.

The Badloves had a point of difference. Complete with raw Hammond organ and guitars, driven bass and drums, and a soul-fuelled singer-songwriter in Spiby, the combo drew a distinct line in the sand. The band was now battle-ready having built its live reputation in the trenches of the Melbourne pub scene.

Come summer ’92, with their soul and RnB undergarments clearly showing, The Badloves cut their own style, distilling unique songs and real performance clout into a studio debut that flagged the arrival of a band whose time had come.

‘Get On Board’ arrived at a time when radio and the live music culture were aligned. The Badloves not only represented what was happening in our venues but also gave us an Australian flavoured take on what would later be called Americana with their Memphis soul influences.

‘Get On Board’ was well received. The Michael Spiby songs ‘Lost’, ‘Green Limousine’ and ‘Memphis’ were the focal point of the album. Spiby’s voice and songs became The Badloves sound. ‘Get On Board’ stayed on the charts for 69 weeks and won three ARIA Awards.

A second album ‘Holy Roadside’ continued to build the story. The Spiby penned ‘Caroline’ was another radio favourite and defined the album. The Badloves earned three more ARIA nominations. However, differences led to demise and The Badloves ended chapter one in 1997.

That is the history. Currently Michael Spiby is keeping The Badloves legacy alive and relevant with new music for 2019. ‘Soulbrothertruckinsong’ is the first new song for The Badloves in over 17 years.
