According to the Official Charts Company of the UK, ‘Fairytale Of New York’ is the 126th million-seller in the United Kingdom.

The song has re-entered the UK chart at Christmas every year for the past eight years.

“It is apt that in the year of its 25th anniversary, Fairytale Of New York has entered into the pantheon of the UK’s all time favourite singles to become the latest – and 126th – million selling single in the history of the British charts. It has been a festive favourite ever since it was first released in 1987, so it is great that it can now claim this new honour”, Martin Talbot of the Official Charts Company said in a statement.
As well as The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl song, eight other songs passed the 1,000,000 sales benchmark this year in the USA. They were Aerosmith’s I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing (originally released in 1998), Cheryl Cole’s Fight For This Love (2009), Matt Cardle’s When We Collide (2010), Rihanna and Calvin Harris’ We Found Love (2011), Jessie J FT B.o.B.’s Price Tag (2011), LMFAO’s Party Rock Anthem (2011) and two tracks which made their Official Singles Chart debuts this year – Gotye FT Kimbra’s Somebody That I Used To Know and Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe.

The Top 10 biggest selling songs in the UK are:

1. Elton John – Candle In The Wind 97
2. Band Aid – Do They Know Its Christmas
3. Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody
4. Wings – Mull of Kintyre
5. John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John – You’re The One That I Want
6. Boney M – Rivers of Babylon
7. Frankie Goes To Hollywood – Relax
8. The Beatles – She Loves You
9. Robson Greene & Jerome Flynn – Unchained Melody
10. Wet Wet Wet – Love Is All Around

The Pogues have opened a time capsule from 1987, releasing the first ever live performance of Fairytale Of New York, captured at Glasgow Barrowland on 17 December 1987. The moment marks the first time Kirsty MacColl ever sang the now iconic duet with the band, during a show that has since become part of Pogues folklore. The newly restored recording has been revived by original producer Steve Lillywhite, who has brought fresh life to the raw desk tape while preserving the ferocity of the night.
