Tom Odell Speaks Of Gender Inequality In Music Industry

Tom Odell insists women’s appearances are still judged more harshly in the music world.

Odell confirmed gender inequality was very much present in the music industry as he helped to launch a drive to improve education for girls across the world alongside singer Laura Mvula.

Tom played a gig at The Shard to launch the Global Citizen and Chime For Change’s #SheWill campaign. It aims to help 63 million girls across the world who are prevented from attending or staying in school.

But while the campaign is battling inequality around the world, Odell, 25, shared that he has personally witnessed gender inequality in the industry.

He told British newspaper The Evening Standard in an interview: “I feel like I can turn up to a TV show and can look like shit and no one’s going to comment on my appearance.

“In exactly the same scenario, I’ve seen girls turning up and their appearance will be commented on. I think that’s unfair,” he added.

Tom is hoping that Global Citizen’s “important” campaign will go some way to redressing the balance, as it aims to press world leaders to create an action plan for female education and create a fund for school access.

Odell added: “If you can educate girls, it leads to a better life for them, and gives them more freedom. It’s crazy that so much gender inequality should still exist in this day and age.”
