Distasteful Microwaves, one of Melbourne’s young and emerging bands, sit down with Paul Cashmere for an exclusive Noise11 Q&A ahead of their appearance at SongMakers Live at the iconic Espy in St Kilda. Vocalist Millie and guitarist Georgie discuss the band’s development, their shared musical influences, and the creative process that powers their energetic live shows.

Millie and Georgie reveal why their upcoming performance will feature two standout tracks: Apathy, a high-energy original that has quickly become a live favourite, and This Is The End, a song crafted through the SongMakers program and originally co-written by their bandmate Lucian. They talk about their early beginnings as songwriters, the evolution of their lyric writing, and the amusing-and sometimes cringe-worthy-memories found in their old notebooks.

With influences ranging from Kings Of Leon and Smashing Pumpkins to Radiohead and Foo Fighters, Distasteful Microwaves draw from a shared palette of alt-rock and indie textures. The band’s writing process typically begins with guitar or bass, gradually forming around drums, riffs, and finally lyrics. They reveal how new songs often shift dramatically during rehearsal, sometimes emerging from entirely unexpected ideas.

Still early in their songwriting journey, the band focuses heavily on the live experience, writing with performance energy in mind. Their goal is simple: audiences should leave their shows feeling uplifted and energised. They even discusses her improvisational lyric line that changes from gig to gig-an inside joke that has become a crowd favourite.

The Q&A also uncovers the origin of their unusual band name, a spontaneous kitchen-rehearsal joke that evolved into the distinctive identity they carry today. With their biggest performance yet on the horizon, Distasteful Microwaves are preparing to make a memorable impact at SongMakers Live.
