In this Noise11 interview, Hugh Cornwell speaks with Paul Cashmere about his upcoming 2026 Australian tour, the legacy of The Stranglers, and the music that still defines his career.
Hugh Cornwell first rose to international fame as the original singer, guitarist and principal songwriter of The Stranglers, one of the most influential bands of the UK punk and new wave era. During the late 1970s and 1980s the band produced a string of iconic songs including “No More Heroes,” “Nice ‘N’ Sleazy,” “Golden Brown,” “Always The Sun” and “Skin Deep.” In Australia those songs became radio staples and helped cement the band’s lasting popularity.
In this conversation Hugh Cornwell discusses the songs fans can expect to hear on his upcoming Australian shows. His setlists combine material from his solo career with classics from The Stranglers, reworked for a powerful three-piece band format. Without keyboards, the arrangements often take on a new feel while still preserving the recognisable melodies that audiences know.
Hugh Cornwell also talks about his most recent album “Moments Of Madness,” which he recorded during the COVID lockdowns while playing every instrument himself. Several tracks from that album now feature in his live shows.
Looking ahead, Hugh Cornwell is currently recording a new album titled “Succubus,” the follow-up to Moments Of Madness. The record is expected in 2027 and continues his long tradition of mixing storytelling, historical references and sharp observations about society.
