Australian guitarist and instrumental composer Plini joins Paul Cashmere at Noise11 to discuss his latest album An Unnameable Desire, the creative process behind instrumental storytelling and the journey of building an international career independently.
In this 2026 Noise11 Q&A, Plini explains the meaning behind the album title An Unnameable Desire and how the phrase reflects emotions that are difficult to describe with words. He reveals how his songs often develop their own imaginary narratives, sometimes resembling animated films, where the guitar becomes the central character guiding the story.
Plini talks about the challenge of creating instrumental music that feels complete without vocals and how influences such as José González helped shape his approach to melody and expression. He also discusses how his songwriting has evolved, with themes and musical ideas connecting different songs across the new album.
The Sydney musician reflects on performing the new material live, how touring has changed the way he writes music, and why independence remains such an important part of his creative identity. Rather than following a traditional release schedule or record industry expectations, Plini explains that he prefers taking the time needed to create music that has genuine meaning.
He also shares his reaction to receiving praise from legendary guitarist Steve Vai, who described him as the future of exceptional guitar playing, and discusses the unexpected attention surrounding Doja Cat’s use of one of his musical ideas.
From bedroom recordings shared online to international tours and a global audience, Plini’s journey represents a modern approach to being an independent artist. Watch Paul Cashmere’s Noise11 conversation with one of Australia’s most innovative guitarists.
