ARIA Singles: Pharrell Williams Happy Returns To Number One

Pharrell Williams is back at number one on the ARIA Singles chart.

The first No.1 single for 2014, “Happy” by Pharrell Williams climbs back to the top spot on the ARIA Singles chart for a sixth week, knocking “Say Something” by A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera off the top spot after only a single week.

“Say Something” went to the top partly because of its use in the promos for ‘Revenge’, and the same is occurring for former No.1 “All of Me” by John Legend, which is now being used in the Smooth FM ads on TV, which is possibly why the song climbs back up to No.3 this week, swapping positions with “Swing” by Joel Fletcher and Savage, which is now 2x▲ Platinum in sales and down to No.4.

“Jump” by Rihanna is up four places to a new peak of No.5, plus it picks up a Gold (●) sales certification and is now the fifth song entitled ‘Jump’ to crack the Top 10, with the previous ones being Van Halen (No.2, 1984), The Pointer Sisters (No.8, 1984), Kris Kross (No.1, 1992), and The Movement (No.7, 1992). After four weeks at its peak of No.5, “Free” by Rudimental and Emeli Sande is down a place to No.6, whilst also down a spot is “Addicted to You” by Avicii to No.7 this week.

After only four weeks within the Top 100, “Take Me Home” by Cash Cash feat BeBe Rexha leaps up twenty-five places to No.8, as Australia now becomes the first country to give the song a Top 10 placing, although it has reached the US Top 10 Dance Tracks chart too (which is based on rotations, not sales). “Rude” by Magic is down a place to No.9 and holding at No.10 is “Trumpets” by Jason DeRulo.

NEW PEAKS & MOVERS: “The Man” by Aloe Blacc is up one spot to a new peak of No.11 and after four weeks at the lower end of the Top 20, “Undressed” by Kim Cesarion is up six places to a new chart height of No.13 and now certified Gold (●). After returning as a remixed version at No.42 last week, “If I Lose Myself” by OneRepublic vs. Alesso leaps twenty-eight spots to No.14 (now Gold ●) and is now the third Top 20 single from their current ‘Native’ album, whilst the current UK No.1 single “Rather Be” by Clean Bandit feat Jess Glynne zooms up thirty-nine spots to land at No.15 this week. Also jumping into the Top 20 this week is “Brave” by Sara Bareilles, which is up a massive twenty-three places to No.17 and up six to No.18 are the group American Authors with “Best Day of My Life”. Eminem and Nate Ruess jump up seven places to No.29 with “Headlights” and of Eminem’s tour here next week, and “Demons” for Imagine Dragons climbs back up four places to No.30.

DOWN DOWN: After four weeks within the Top 10, “Strong” (HP-4) by London Grammar is down five places this week to No.12, and with an influx of new entries to the Top 20, the next big drop comes from MKTO with “God Only Knows”, down six to No.20. “Riptide” by Vance Joy drops ten places to No.21 and Lorde’s “The Love Club” EP is down eleven spots to No.24, whilst Tiesto is down seven to No.27 with “Red Lights”. “Let it Go” by Idina Menzel is down a place to No.28 and now certified Gold (●) in sales and after jumping to No.22 last week, “Drunk in Love” by Beyonce & Jay-Z falls back nine to No.31, with “Drop the Game” by Flume & Chet Faker down twelve places to No.35. “Like a Drum” by Guy Sebastian is down seven places to No.36 but is now certified 3x▲ Platinum in sales and after a rise last week, Miley Cyrus’ “Adore You” falls back twelve to No.37. “XO” for Beyonce is also down eight places to No.40 and “Team” for Lorde drops twelve spots to No.42, whilst falling out of last weeks Top 50 are “Legacy” by Nicky Romero vs. Krewella (44 to 59), and Kylie Minogue’s “Into the Blue” (46 to 96).

INXS: Never Tear Us Apart Mini-Series: With over two million+ viewers last Sunday night for the first of the two-part INXS mini-series ‘Never Tear us Apart’, they score seven songs within the Top 100 this week, with their 1988 No.14 single “Never Tear Us Apart” leaping up twenty-nine places to No.16 this week (two places lower than it’s original peak). Returning to the charts are the following tracks; “Need You Tonight” (#33, HP-3, peaked Nov. 1987), “New Sensation” (#56, HP-9, peaked June 1988), “Original Sin” (#61, HP-1×2, peaked late Jan. 1984), “By My Side” (#67, HP-23, peaked June 1991), “Beautiful Girl” (#77, HP-34, peaked May 1993) and “Don’t Change” (#92, HP-21, peaked Dec. 1981). There are also six of their albums which return, debut or climb this week too.

UK singer/songwriter Ryan Keen has the highest new entry this week, debuting at No.50 with “Old Scars”, which is taken from his current album “Room for Light”, and Australia seems to be the first country to place the song upon its charts (that I could find at least).

Lower 50: After sneaking in at No.96 last week, “I Spy” by Mikhael Paskalev bounds up forty five places to No.51, and once again “Animals” by Martin Garrix is back up, this week climbing eight places to No.60. “Sail” by Awolnation is back up twenty-two places to No.72 and apart from the multi-INXS tracks, the other re-entries for the week include “Only One” (HP-44) by John Butler Trio (as his new album “Flesh & Blood” debuts at No.2) at No.91 and the original 2005 version of “Swing” (HP-36) by Savage at No.95.

Last December, Afrojack (with Spree Wilson) made it to No.37 with the track “The Spark”, and this week Afrojack returns at No.62 with guest vocalist Wrabel on the song “Ten Feet Tall”, whilst another multi-chart-entry dance act Zedd debuts at No.68 with “Find You” featuring guest vocalists Matthew Koma (US singer/songwriter and Carly Rae Jepsen’s current boyfriend) and Miriam Bryant (Swedish singer/songwriter), with the song coming from the March 2014 due film ‘Divergent’. This is the third entry for Zedd after “Clarity” (HP-13, peaked Aug 2013) and “Stay the Night” (HP-11, peaked Oct 2013).

U2 land their first chart entry in five years (and one week), as they debut at No.79 with the song “Invisible (Red)”, with royalties going to AIDS research, and it’s the first single lifted from their forthcoming 13th studio album (unnamed as yet). The last time the band was on the charts was back on the 2nd of February, 2009 with “Get Your Boots on” (HP-26), and this becomes the bands forty-fifth ARIA Top 100 Singles chart entry.

Debuting at No.80 is the second single (first here) for UK four-piece female group Neon Jungle, the single entitled “Braveheart” reached No.4 on the English charts. Local singer Chet Faker enters at No.82 with “Talk is Cheap”, which is the first single released from his upcoming second album “Built on Glass” (due April), and he is also currently charting with Flume on the track “Drop the Game” (TW-35). Dennis Princewell Stehr is better known as Mr. Probz, a Dutch hip hop artist, songwriter and producer who scores the final new entry of the week at No.94 with his song “Waves (Robin Schulz Radio Edit)”.

Why Streaming Charts Cannot Be Compared To The Physical Sales Era

by Paul Cashmere The modern music charts used by ARIA, Billboard and the UK's Official Charts Company now measure an entirely different form of consumer behaviour than the charts of the vinyl, cassette and CD eras. While chart headlines frequently compare contemporary streaming milestones with historical sales achievements, industry analysts increasingly acknowledge that the two systems are built on fundamentally incompatible metrics.
