The comedian, actor, writer and director will bring his new Hypothetical stand-up show to Auckland, Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne in September and October.

Aziz Ansari will return to Australia and New Zealand in September and October 2026 with his new stand-up show, Hypothetical, marking his first announced Australian tour in several years. The Emmy-winning comedian will perform four dates, beginning at Auckland’s Civic Theatre on September 24 before travelling to Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne.
The tour places Ansari back on the international live comedy circuit following a career that has moved between stand-up, television, film and directing. The Australian dates also follow the release of his feature film Good Fortune, which he wrote, directed and starred in alongside Keanu Reeves and Seth Rogen.
The Australian and New Zealand run is being presented by TEG Dainty and will consist of one performance in each city. After Auckland, Ansari will perform at the Sydney Opera House on September 28, the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on September 30 and Melbourne’s Margaret Court Arena on October 1.
Ansari developed his career in New York stand-up before expanding into sketch comedy, television and film. His first major television project was Human Giant, the MTV sketch series he created with Rob Huebel, Paul Scheer and Jason Woliner. The series ran for two seasons in 2007 and 2008.
His breakthrough mainstream television role followed with NBC’s Parks and Recreation, where he played Tom Haverford throughout the series’ seven seasons from 2009 to 2015.
Ansari subsequently moved into authorship and television creation with Master of None, the Netflix series he developed with Alan Yang. Ansari starred as Dev Shah and also wrote and directed episodes. The series earned multiple awards, including two Emmys for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, with Ansari and Yang winning for the episode “Parents”. Ansari also received a Golden Globe for his performance in the series.
Stand-up has remained a central part of his career. His early specials included Intimate Moments for a Sensual Evening, Dangerously Delicious and Buried Alive, followed by Live at Madison Square Garden, Right Now and Nightclub Comedian.
Right Now, released by Netflix in 2019 and directed by Spike Jonze, received a Grammy nomination for Best Comedy Album. Nightclub Comedian, released in 2022, is currently the most recent of Ansari’s Netflix stand-up specials listed in the supplied tour material.
Ansari’s screen career has increasingly included filmmaking. His feature Good Fortune gave him an opportunity to write, direct and star in a theatrical comedy with Reeves and Rogen, alongside Keke Palmer and Sandra Oh.
The film also created a recent connection between Ansari and Australian music. As previously reported by Noise11, Good Fortune features The Go-Betweens’ “Streets of Your Town” and Real Life’s “Send Me An Angel”. Neither song appears on the official soundtrack album, but both recordings are used in the film.
The selections connect Ansari’s latest film work with two Australian recordings from the 1980s that have continued to find audiences beyond their original releases. The Go-Betweens’ “Streets of Your Town” was released in 1988 on 16 Lovers Lane, while Real Life’s “Send Me An Angel” dates from 1983.
Ansari also previously attempted to make Being Mortal, a feature based on Atul Gawande’s book, with Bill Murray, Keke Palmer and Seth Rogen. Production was suspended in 2022 following a complaint concerning Murray’s conduct on set.
Ansari began performing comedy while studying at New York University and established himself in the New York comedy scene during the 2000s. His early work included regular performances at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre and the Invite Them Up series.
He toured with the Comedians of Comedy and Flight of the Conchords before launching his own tours, including Glow in the Dark, Dangerously Delicious and Buried Alive. His 2015 Netflix special Live at Madison Square Garden documented his growing status as a major arena-level comedy performer.
In 2018, Ansari temporarily stepped away from public performance following a sexual misconduct allegation published by Babe.net. Ansari disputed the allegation, saying the encounter was consensual. The episode generated differing interpretations over consent and sexual misconduct and became part of the wider public discussion surrounding the #MeToo movement. He returned to stand-up and subsequently developed The Road to Nowhere, leading into the 2019 Right Now special.
The forthcoming Hypothetical tour therefore represents another chapter in a stand-up career that has developed across two decades and multiple forms of entertainment.
The four-date itinerary gives Ansari performances in three Australian capital cities as well as Auckland. The Sydney Opera House and Margaret Court Arena dates place the comedian in two of Australia’s prominent cultural and entertainment venues.
TEG Dainty has confirmed that general public tickets will go on sale Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at 12pm local time.
For Ansari, the Australian and New Zealand shows provide an opportunity to present his current stand-up material directly to audiences while his work continues across comedy, television and film.
