Barbra Streisand Is Off To The Tonys

Barbra Streisand only appeared in two Broadway shows during her very long career yet she is regularly seen as a standard bearer of The Great White Way.

She made her debut in 1962 with a supporting part in I Can Get It For You Wholesale before her big breakthrough two years later in Funny Girl. The latter was a true star-making vehicle, with TV specials, recording success and films quickly following.

Barbara never returned to Broadway even though she was recognized with Tony nominations for both shows, losing the 1962 Featured Actress award to Phyllis Newman in Subways Are For Sleeping and the 1964 Leading Actress prize to Carol Channing in Hello Dolly! Even with the losses, she received a special award at the 1970 show for Star of the Decade, but it was the last Tonys show that she attended.

On June 12, Streisand will break that long streak after 46 years when she returns to the Tony stage at the Beacon Theater in New York for the 70th annual show. While it isn’t known what her role will be, many are assuming she will be giving out Best Musical with practically every bet being placed on Hamilton as the winner.

Other veteran musical artists said to be participating in the show, so far, include Carole King, whose Beautiful continues to draw huge crowds and Steve Martin and Edie Brickell who are not only nominated for their musical Bright Star, but will also be presenting.
