Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones likes to branch out. For a few years, he was involved in the bluegrass and Americana scene in the U.S. Now he has changed gears and is writing an opera.

The site Red Carpet News caught up with Jones after the London premier of Philip Glass’ opera The Perfect American.” When asked what attracted him to the genre, Jones said “It’s unlike anything else. It’s the emotion, the passion…and I’m writing an opera myself so I have to say that.”

The opera is based on The Ghost Sonata by August Stringberg and, at this time, Jones is only half way through writing the first act.

RCN asked what the challenges in writing opera were to which Jones replied “The sheer scale of it, I think. I’m probably about to find out what the challenges are.”

The even bigger news is that, even though Robert Plant has hinted that his calendar was open in 2014 for a possible Led Zeppelin reunion, that’s not the case for Jones. “2014 is full of opera for me at the moment.”
