Keith Richards says has never obeyed anyone.
The Rolling Stones rocker is one of the most famous musicians on the planet alongside his bandmates Sir Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts.
Education wasn’t a priority for Keith when he was younger and after being expelled from school in 1959, the star hasn’t worked beneath anyone.
“No. You’re talking to somebody, like Mick, who has never, ever said, ‘Yes, sir,’ to anybody or obeyed instructions that we didn’t want to. I’ve said yes to many people only because I respect them. But no, I’ve never had a boss,” he told US Esquire. “Even my bankers and my lawyers have all gone through the mill. Even royalty go through it – they’re told what to do. I’ve lived a totally free life. They gave me wings.”
He admits it can be scary at times as he has no guidelines and compares himself to Icarus, the character from Greek mythology who flew too close to the sun and his wings melted.
The Rolling Stones have won over fans with anthems such as Brown Sugar and Satisfaction over the years and Keith feels incredibly lucky to have found fame, joking that his shaggy hairdo could have helped him.
The band are still touring over 50 years since forming, recently completing their ZIP CODE shows in North America. The 71-year-old loves the sense of adrenaline on stage.
“Yeah. It’s probably the only drug left to us, the one that draws us back as much as anything – although there is something about playing with this bunch of guys,” he added. “Is it habit? Is it just the length of time we’ve been doing it? But when we start rehearsing, I always find this incredible enthusiasm among them all – especially this tour. It’s been a great feeling from show one.”
