When we saw the Top 100 of 2011 on New Year’s Day one thing was for sure … quality was not a contributing factor to year’s sales figures.

The Buble ‘Christmas’ album was the second biggest selling album of 2011 in Australia. LMFAO three tracks in the year end Top 40, two in the Top 10 and the biggest selling song of the year in Australia with ‘Party Rock Anthem’.

Not much has changed in 2012. LMFAO ‘Sexy And I Know It’ is the number one single. Michael Buble ‘Christmas’ is the number one album.

Debut singles this week were ‘Wild Ones’ Flo Rida feat Sia (29), ‘Summer Paradise’ (Simple Plan feat. K’naan (40) and ‘Sorry For Party Rocking’ LMFAO (49).

There were no debut albums in the Top 50.

Music labels won’t really kick in the new releases for a few more weeks yet so expect to see more of the same next week.

Why Streaming Charts Cannot Be Compared To The Physical Sales Era

by Paul Cashmere The modern music charts used by ARIA, Billboard and the UK's Official Charts Company now measure an entirely different form of consumer behaviour than the charts of the vinyl, cassette and CD eras. While chart headlines frequently compare contemporary streaming milestones with historical sales achievements, industry analysts increasingly acknowledge that the two systems are built on fundamentally incompatible metrics.
