Launched in 1982 in France as the Fête de la Musique, MAKE MUSIC DAY is now held on the same day (June 21) in more than 750 cities in 120 countries.

Completely different from a typical music festival, Make Music Day is open to anyone who wants to take part. Every kind of musician — young and old, amateur and professional, of every musical persuasion — can organise their own gig, or join the many organisations that will host events, to share their music with friends, neighbours, and strangers. All of it is free and open to the public.

In partnership with the NAMM Foundation, the Australian Music Association has been laying the foundation to launch Make Music Day in Australia on June 21, 2018.

Getting right behind the inaugural Australian version of Make Music Day is the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Live from the iconic Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra will mark Australia’s first flagship event in the international Make Music Day celebrations with a global broadcast of its performance of Verdi’s Requiem on 21 June. Kicking off the celebrations held in over 800 cities in 120 countries, a livestream of the nation’s pre-eminent orchestra performing Verdi’s Requiem will be available free of charge at sydneysymphony.com and will be available for 24 hours from 6.30pm on Thursday, 21 June AEST.

As an example of the community spirit Make Music Day has generated, Burnley Brewing is putting on the ultimate group karaoke session, Glee Club at the Pub, teaming up with Australian Vocal specialist Vicky Jacobs. The City of Parramatta is presenting a Busks for a Cure Day, raising funds for Cancer Council NSW. Bernie’s Musicland in Ringwood Victoria is offering free keyboard lessons and Music Cavern in Beenleigh, QLD is hosting events in their town square. Shopping centres are getting in on the Make Music day action too, with Mill Park and Epping Plaza centres in Victoria presenting events.

Major arts organisations also involved in the day include Community music Victoria, Arts Centre Melbourne, Create NSW, APRA AMCOS and the Live Music Office, plus many more.

For information on the hundreds of other events nationally and to register your own event, visit the Make Music Australia website at http://makemusicaustralia.org.au/
